Springfield Associates was established with the ambition of creating bespoke, handmade fine furniture and wood based products to the highest standard.

Initially discovering a love of woodworking as a teenager at school, Mark went on and started his post university career in finance, working in both London and New York. The desire and passion to make things with his hands however never left and when he subsequently moved out to the English countryside he took advantage of the additional space and opportunity and revisited this passion.

Starting with secondhand machinery bought from a local joinery company, the studio workshop was born. Over time it continued to grow and evolve, with an increasing desire to incorporate finely tuned hand tools into the work as much as possible.

He subsequently enrolled in one of the top furniture schools in the UK, Robinson House Studios based in Newhaven, under the tutelage of Marc Fish, where his skills and precision were greatly enhanced.

This was later augmented by studying traditional Japanese carpentry at the Suikoushya School in Kyoto, Japan, being taught by Takami Kawai who setup the school. Experiencing the quality of the Japanese workmanship, the high regard craftspeople are held in over there and meticulous attention to detail left a lasting impression.

One of the attractions of bespoke studio furniture is it allows for a wide range of disciplines to be brought to bear, including veneering, bent lamination, steam bending and non ferrous metal work as well as more traditional solid timber work and precision joinery.

The time spent at the bench, doing the best work possible is a joy in itself, and is very much the case that it is the journey and not the destination that is the goal; a timeless antidote to the modern fast paced era.
